Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long will it take to get an appointment for an assessment?

Our current wait times for assessment are between two and four weeks from the time we receive a referral from a primary care provider such as your family doctor or a nurse practitioner.

2. What does an ADHD assessment involve at our office?

The ADHD assessment is a comprehensive and personalized approach by a Canadian trained psychiatrist with extensive experience in assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders. We provide assessment of ADHD and establish medication treatment for patients 18 years and over. After we schedule your appointment, you will receive an email with links to a number of rating scales and cognitive testing. The rating scales and cognitive testing can be done online using a laptop or desk top computer. It is very important that you complete the rating scales and cognitive testing prior to the appointment date as we will be reviewing the results of that testing during your appointment. We are only booking online appointments at this time through a video link but expect to be able to schedule in office assessments starting in November 2024.

3. Can I get a copy of the report?

The assessment report will be sent to the referring practitioner. If requested, we will also send a copy to the patient.

4. Does your office provide follow-up care?

After completing the initial assessment, we provide follow-up care to establish medication treatment for ADHD, if indicated. Follow up sessions can be done by telephone or in person.

5. Does your office provide treatment for other psychiatric conditions?

While the initial psychiatric assessment will identify other conditions, our focus is on assessment and treatment of ADHD. We do not currently provide treatment of other psychiatric disorders.

6. Does your office complete tax credit applications, disability paperwork, or insurance related documents?

We will complete any required documents. This is not covered by MSP and there will be an additional fee.

7. What is the cost of the ADHD assessment?

The psychiatric evaluation is covered by the BC Medical Services Plan. However, our assessment includes cognitive testing which is not covered. The cost for the cognitive testing is $380.

8. What is involved in the cognitive testing?

Our clinic uses a standardized battery of tests that evaluates eleven cognitive domains. These do not provide a diagnosis on their own but when integrated with the clinical evaluation provide important information regarding a patient’s individual cognitive profile.

9. Can I get an assessment without the cognitive testing?

No. The cognitive testing is an essential part of the assessment as it provides important information to assist in the diagnosis and in establishing medication treatment.

10. What is your refund policy?

Once the appointment is scheduled and we have sent the links for the cognitive testing to you, we do not provide a refund. However, we are happy to accommodate you with rescheduling of the appointment.

11. How do I get a referral for an ADHD assessment?

The referral to our office for assessment of ADHD needs to come from a physician, nurse practitioner, or specialist physicians.

12. If I’m already taking stimulant medication for ADHD, do I take my medication on the day I do the cognitive testing?

On the day of cognitive testing you should take all of your usual medications except any stimulants being prescribed for ADHD. We want to establish a cognitive profile without the stimulant medication. In other words, we want to establish your baseline level of cognitive function.
